Did you know that the risk of kidney damage after COVID-19 is higher than those without the infection?
It is challenging to detect the clinical manifestations of renal dysfunction.
Because patients do not generally experience any specific pain or symptoms to suggest that their kidneys are impaired!!!
Even some estimates suggest that 90% of people with kidney disease are unaware of their condition.
However, the consequences of chronic kidney disease are awful:
It is one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide!!!
New findings show that,
Individuals who have survived from COVID-19 infection, including mild disease state, have a significantly higher risk of developing serious kidney disease.
A group of researchers from the University of Washington in-depth examined the health records of more than 1.7 million individuals (healthy and COVID-infected) between 2020-2021.
The results of the study were published in a highly respected scientific journal, the Journal of The American Society of Nephrology.
Although there are tens of thousands of scientific publications on the subject,
However, this research highlights the importance of paying close attention to kidney function after COVID-19.
In the dataset of the study:
- 13.9% of COVID-19 patients had the disease severe enough to require hospitalization,
- 4.6% of those hospitalized had to be managed in intensive care units (ICU).
The researchers found that the highest risk of kidney damage was among patients admitted to intensive care units.
In the follow-up of these patients, it is observed that:
- They were seven times more likely to experience an adverse kidney event
- End-stage kidney disease risk was 13 times higher compared to the control group
The Meaning of This Data For Kidney Disease Risk:
The risk of kidney disease, which is already very high in the community, increases dramatically even if you have survived the infection itself after COVID-19!!!
These similar situations have been called with a new name: Long COVID…
I will explain the Long COVID in more detail in another article…
You can be protected from Long COVID complications if you manage not to be infected with SARS-CoV2!!!
For this, the formula is crystal clear…
- Get your full dose vaccination
- Encourage people around you to get vaccinated
- And in the meantime, pay attention to the Mask – Social Distancing and Hygiene rules
Wishing you healthy days…
